Daikundi is a province of Afghanistan located in the Central Highlands region. It covers an area of 16 655 Km2 and is almost exclusively mountainous. BDN has implemented the Basic Package of Health Services and the Essential Package of Hospital Services in the nine districts of Daikundi since May 2009 through 1 Provincial Hospital, 2 District Hospital, 4 Community Health Centers Plus, 4 Community Health Centers, 14 Basic Health Clinics, 13 Sub Centers 3 Mobile Clinics and 325 Health Posts. The delivery of health packages in Daikundi is not an easy task due to the rugged and treacherous terrain, the presence of extremely remote villages and the security issues. However BDN has brought significant improvements regarding to public health by expanding the coverage of services. In only two years, the number of health facilities increased from 9 to 41 thus bringing services closer to communities that have historically been deprived of it. BDN also introduced mobile health teams in Daikundi healthcare system. These teams belong to health sub-centers and thus establish a link between the health posts located in remote rural areas and the larger Basic Health Centers. They constitute a strategic manner of offering key services to the most distant and therefore the most vulnerable. Regarding to Reproductive, Maternal and Child Health, BDN implemented a two years programme in six districts of Daikundi from 2006 to 2008 that was based on an assessment made by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). That programme focused on strengthening the available infrastructure thus permitting to increase the access of women to emergency obstetric care services, as well as on promoting general awareness on reproductive, maternal and child health issues. The capacity-building of the healthcare personnel consisted in enabling them to provide emergency obstetric care, while the referral system for women at risk was further strengthened by developing the links between communities and health facilities. |
